Kim Cascone - Dust Theories

From Allmusic.com "An important item in micro-sound artist Kim Cascone's scattered discography, Dust Theories contains two extended pieces based on his concept of sonic residue ("Dust Theories 1" and "Dust Theories 2"), a shorter piece ("Edgeboundaries 123"), and finally two remixes of the latter track by Ben Nevile and DJ4'33". The two 20-minute selections show Cascone at the peak of his minimal self. His clicks, glitches, and hums become space symphonies for the digital age. His techniques may involve more mathematics than music, but the result is immersive and fascinating -- you truly forget the gear. Unlike other sound artists, Cascone doesn't let the concept overrule the result. "Edgeboundaries 123" is harsher in style, more dense, busy, and clumsy. A departure from earlier efforts, it remains nonetheless rooted in the same kind of "pure" digital sounds. Nevile's remix transforms it into a warped, slightly annoying techno track. The transformations of DJ4'33" are much more interesting. They explore ambient domains in tune with the first two tracks of the CD and use the residue technique (filtering out elements of the original to keep only its trace), therefore re-Cascone-fying a piece some probably consider less typical of the artist in the first place. The CD also contains an enhanced section with a stand-alone application and Max/MSP patches to tinker the remixes; after all, Dust Theories was released on the music software company Cycling '74's label."

From Allmusic.com : "This two-CD compilation describes better than words the scope and interest of the field of attentive listening and microscopic sounds. Beautifully and originally designed, the box contains previously unreleased contributions by a representative cross section of artists. Disc one focuses on pieces derived from field recordings or recordings of acoustic instruments. Gal's "Zhu Shui" (an assemblage of bowling up and cooling down tea kettles) and John Hudak's "Radio Past" (a wax cylinder recording severely altered by the passage of time) stand out, with contributions by Dale Lloyd and Jason Lescalleet also offering memorable moments. Radu Malfatti's "Selbander" is an excruciatingly minimal piece for three trombones made of short episodes of droning activity separated by lengthy silences. Disc two culls tracks of a more purely electronic nature and here we find many top names in the field of experimental electronica and installation art: Francisco Lopez, Stephan Mathieu, Carl Stone, Tetsu Inoue, Taylor Deupree, Kim Cascone -- even Toshimaru Nakamura is represented with one of his pieces on no-input mixing board. Stone's gentle ambient workout "Tefu" and Ronnie Sundin's (aka Rsundin) "_siesmol" provide the highlights of this second platter. Second and final release in our Anechoic Media series, "With Hidden noise" is a collaboration between Keith Rowe (of AMM) and Kim Cascone (formerly of PGR).

Kim Cascone - Parasites

Here we start a short series centered around the first two releases from Anechoic Media, the label headed by American composer Kim Cascone (formerly of PGR and Silent Records).
Anechoic Media issues were distinctive in that they were released in square shaped CD format known as "Card Discs".
The first release entitled "Parasites" is Kim Cascone's personal tribute to Gilles Deleuze.
Most of the 20 numbered parasites are in the 6 seconds to 1 and 1/2 minute range for a total of about 16 and 1/2 minutes.
Each piece is a fragment of heavily processed, digital desktop minimalism.

"Parasites" was released in 2000.
