From Allmusic.com : "Originally released by Extreme in 1991, Tamper acts as an important part of Jim O'Rourke's discography, as it's one of the first of his electro-acoustic works. Surprisingly, it is also the most accessible of his pre-Bad Timing solo albums, although it is a bit challenging at the same time. For example, the first track on Tamper is a difficult, yet rewarding piece. It demands complete attention from the listener, as it starts with a barely audible oscillator, only later bringing the actual instruments slowly in. The bottom line of Tamper -- and the bottle-neck to understanding it -- is that the sounds of these instruments (apart from some occasional oboes) are manipulated so that they hardly can be recognized. This is an old and now-exhaustive trick in O'Rourke's field of work, but on Tamper he has found a very idiosyncratic way of defining traditional instruments. Tamper works well on so many different levels that it can be recommended to any open-minded listener at all -- no matter if you prefer rock or avant-garde."

From Allmusic.com : "After Genesis P-Orridge dissolved the seminal industrial rock outfit Throbbing Gristle, he and Gristle cohorts Peter Christopherson and Cosey Fanni Tutti, plus Geoff Rushton, formed Psychic TV in 1979 as a means of continuing their confrontational, shock-oriented approach to music and their multimedia live performances. Psychic TV draws much of its inspiration from the literary underground, including situationist philosophy, William Burroughs (a professed fan), the Marquis de Sade, and Philip K. Dick. The group also claims to be the mouthpiece for its own quasi-religious group, the Temple Ov Psychick Youth. P-Orridge has been branded a dangerous deviant in several publications, and police raided his home in 1992, seizing videos, books, and magazines following a television show concerning child abuse in which a Psychic TV performance art video was shown out of context.

As for the music itself, Psychic TV's earlier years continued in the experimental vein of Throbbing Gristle's work, encompassing melodic pop, barely listenable white noise, gentle ballads, industrial found-sound collages, spoken word pieces, and experiments with ethnic instruments and world music, all tied together by a dadaist sensibility. Force the Hand of Chance, the group's first album, was released in 1982; during the '80s, Psychic TV's prodigious output totaled over 20 albums. Much of this stemmed from a publicity stunt beginning in 1986 for which the group attempted to release one live album, each from a different nation, on the 23rd of each month for 23 months. Even though the group didn't quite achieve its goal, the 14 albums Psychic TV released in 18 months were enough to get the group into the Guinness Book of World Records. Christopherson and Rushton both left the group rather early on to form Coil, and Psychic TV has since become an open-ended collective with contributors such as Alex Fergusson, formerly of Alternative TV. Psychic TV scored a minor U.K. pop hit in 1986 with "Godstar," a tribute to Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, and 1988 saw the group's first album release in America with Allegory and Self.

Beginning in 1988, P-Orridge became a pioneer on the British club and rave scene. Records from the Chicago house scene by Frankie Knuckles and Farley Jackmaster Funk made their way to London, and when P-Orridge noticed the word "acid" on one of them, he dubbed the British psychedelic variation "acid house" and began recording and experimenting with the style on Jack the Tab: Acid Tablets, Vol. 1 and Towards Thee Infinite Beat. P-Orridge has since released albums under the name Psychic TV as well as using a variety of aliases to produce "compilation" albums actually featuring all his own music. Several Psychic TV collections, as well as new material, appeared in the '90s; the best of the retrospectives are the two singles compilations Hex Sex and Godstar, and the 1999 overview Best Ov: Time's Up. New Psychic TV material took a backseat as P-Orridge's commitment to his spoken word project Thee Majesty and a new philosophy he dubbed "Pandrogeny" occupied his time. It was the latter that had him going under the knife for breast implants and enforcing the use of the pronoun s/he. PTV work began again in 2003 with two years of touring leading to studio work. A new album was delayed when Throbbing Gristle reunited for a short time, but work resumed in 2006. The finished product, Hell Is Invisible...Heaven Is Here, arrived a year later. P-Orridge's wife and bandmate, Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, died of heart failure a few months after its release. A tribute to her, Mr. Alien Brain vs. the Skinwalkers, was released near the end of 2008, featuring versions of Syd Barrett's 'No Good Trying' and the Velvet Underground's 'Foggy Notion'."

Kim Cascone - Dust Theories

From Allmusic.com "An important item in micro-sound artist Kim Cascone's scattered discography, Dust Theories contains two extended pieces based on his concept of sonic residue ("Dust Theories 1" and "Dust Theories 2"), a shorter piece ("Edgeboundaries 123"), and finally two remixes of the latter track by Ben Nevile and DJ4'33". The two 20-minute selections show Cascone at the peak of his minimal self. His clicks, glitches, and hums become space symphonies for the digital age. His techniques may involve more mathematics than music, but the result is immersive and fascinating -- you truly forget the gear. Unlike other sound artists, Cascone doesn't let the concept overrule the result. "Edgeboundaries 123" is harsher in style, more dense, busy, and clumsy. A departure from earlier efforts, it remains nonetheless rooted in the same kind of "pure" digital sounds. Nevile's remix transforms it into a warped, slightly annoying techno track. The transformations of DJ4'33" are much more interesting. They explore ambient domains in tune with the first two tracks of the CD and use the residue technique (filtering out elements of the original to keep only its trace), therefore re-Cascone-fying a piece some probably consider less typical of the artist in the first place. The CD also contains an enhanced section with a stand-alone application and Max/MSP patches to tinker the remixes; after all, Dust Theories was released on the music software company Cycling '74's label."

Satoru Wono uses two extreme elements: sine waves (pure tones, no harmonics) and white noise (all frequencies, saturation). He shapes and combines them with a computer, which gives the music its contemporary feel. But it retains the excitement of early experiments, both academic and popular (with a nod to Wendy Carlos' famous Moog-ified classics). The "Overture" and "Canon" expose in two short pieces the range of available possibilities, from sickening sine wave drones all the way to driving techno. But the main course is in the "Sonata," in four very different movements. Here, Wono's structural talent comes into play. The first movement, "Sonata," is an abstract construction of tones reminiscent of Herbert Brün's early computer music (but warmer). The "Scherzo" is beat-driven, something like Autechre playing with oscillators. The computer's role becomes more apparent as Wono shapes tones into interlocking beats and patterns. The "Adagio" takes the form of a delicate drone of white noise and sine waves. The "Divertimento" reminds listeners that Wono also works as a techno DJ: it is a playful skeletal techno track, fast-paced and relentless. The album is completed by the 18-minute "Variation in A," a slowly escalating composition on a single note. Wono gradually stacks parts and patterns to put together a techno symphony of monophonic electronica -- nice, but not as impressive as the "Sonata." This album provides a surprisingly gentle listen wrapped in an enticing artistic concept."

From Allmusic.com : "An electronica duo from bucolic Kelowna, British Columbia, Vote Robot prided itself on using vintage equipment, creating experimental music with a palpable human warmth. Analog synths, doctored tapes, turntables, and mixing consoles were their favorite sound sources, to the conscious exclusion of computers, samplers, and other modern digital devices. The results were often compared to the pioneering glitch style of Oval, despite having taken a much different path to get there. Vote Robot members Kevin Rivard and Scott August first met when Rivard was August's babysitter. August developed a home-taping habit in his teens, and he and Rivard began collaborating in the mid-'90s, when August also released solo material under the name French Paddleboat. The first Vote Robot releases were cassette only, until Catsup Plate issued R.U.R. in LP format in 1995. Both of its pressings sold out completely, as did a more limited remix album, Versions, in 1998. Early the next year, August landed his first CD release as French Paddleboat with Conversions in Metric, and the resultant exposure helped draw more attention to Vote Robot as well. Their own debut CD release came in the form of 2001's In Meorm NA, issued by Vancouver indie Scratch. It was followed by another vinyl-only album, Five Score Six Bicycle."

From Allmusic.com : "Formed in Sheffield, England, in 1980 by Cabaret Voltaire alum Chris Watson and Andrew McKenzie, the Hafler Trio were never a three-piece in any actual sense -- in fact, the third member originally credited to the lineup, one Dr. Edward Moolenbeek, was (according to an interview with McKenzie in the March/April 1991 issue of Option magazine) reportedly an expert in psycho-acoustic research who edited the journal Science Review during the 1930s. Much of the Hafler Trio's mystique stems from the deliberate misinformation the group consistently set forth -- although their records regularly came packaged with deluxe graphs, diagrams, and essays detailing the purported effects of sound on the listener, the scientific authenticity of their "findings" is debatable; for example, their 1984 debut, Bang! An Open Letter, claims to be based on the studies of an acoustic researcher named Robert Spridgeon, complete with bibliography. Spridgeon later proved to be a complete fabrication, however, and over the course of subsequent efforts, including 1985's Alternation, Perception and Resistance -- A Comprehension Exercise EP, 1986's Three Ways of Saying Two -- The Netherlands Lectures, and Dislocation, the Hafler Trio continued baffling audiences with a deluge of propaganda, clouding perceptions to increase the visceral impact of their music."

From Allmusic.com : "The compilation CD Minima-List launched the small French label List, devoted to minimal music (i.e. microsound, lowercase, etc.), both electronic and acoustic. It introduces the work of a few French artists placed among tracks by better-known names like Komet (aka Frank Bretschneider), Otomo Yoshihide, Taylor Deupree, and Richard Chartier. The musical grounds covered are a lot less minimal than one would expect. There are worlds to discover between Chartier's see-through, silence-drenched tones and the textured noise of Fabriquedecouleurs (aka Emmanuel Allard). Each artist has enough time to make a statement (three to eight minutes) and the order of appearance makes sure there is enough contrast between tracks to let particularities shine. Highlights include the distilled beats and melody of Komet's "Zug," Speakerine's harsh feedback guitar-driven "Minim Ammo" (quite an ear cleanser), Matthieu Saladin's multi-tracked sopranino sax drone (or is it a double-reed instrument?), and Alan Licht's concluding "Retrograde," a dreamy guitar loop. What about Yoshihide, you may ask? The 12-minute "2 Guitars" features him playing two guitars at once -- actually he produces out of them single pure tones one just a bit out of tune with the other. Sine waves flap, the sonic landscape shifts as the listener turns his/her head or moves around in the room. Very minimal indeed. Minima-List should satisfy fans of the genre and can work as a good introduction to its major exponents and stylistic directions."

Beautifully and originally designed, the box contains previously unreleased contributions by a representative cross section of artists. Disc one focuses on pieces derived from field recordings or recordings of acoustic instruments. Gal's "Zhu Shui" (an assemblage of bowling up and cooling down tea kettles) and John Hudak's "Radio Past" (a wax cylinder recording severely altered by the passage of time) stand out, with contributions by Dale Lloyd and Jason Lescalleet also offering memorable moments. Radu Malfatti's "Selbander" is an excruciatingly minimal piece for three trombones made of short episodes of droning activity separated by lengthy silences. Disc two culls tracks of a more purely electronic nature and here we find many top names in the field of experimental electronica and installation art: Francisco Lopez, Stephan Mathieu, Carl Stone, Tetsu Inoue, Taylor Deupree, Kim Cascone -- even Toshimaru Nakamura is represented with one of his pieces on no-input mixing board. Stone's gentle ambient workout "Tefu" and Ronnie Sundin's (aka Rsundin) "_siesmol" provide the highlights of this second platter. The latter piece contains a sudden loud sound that ranks as the set's only heart-attack-inducing moment -- you'll remember it. In short, lowercase-sound 2002 is an open-minded, inclusive collection rating high as being representative of both the artists involved in this style and the kind of design that usually accompanies their music. Curd Duca - Elevator 3

From Allmusic.com : "Self-described as "digitalanalog mood music," Curd Duca's Elevator 3 album jams together 48 short pieces of sound montage, using digital processing to splice together and manipulate warm acoustic sounds. Five of the songs employ the soothing vocals of Carin Feldschmid, bringing these otherwise entirely abstract pieces closer to our schema of a traditional song; the humanity of her voice elevates these songs to the status of being the most memorable moments on the album. Yet even these few songs with vocals tend to pass by unconsciously as Duca quickly transitions from one song to the next so smoothly that only the most attentive listeners will notice. And keep in mind that Duca doesn't expect the listener to be attentive; he doesn't call it mood music for nothing. The music tends to flow in a stream of consciousness-like manner, from one brief moment of acoustic sound to the next. There are few salient moments and virtually no dominant rhythms, only subtly pulsing beats, fading samples, and breaths of quiet noise. This lack of salient attributes combines with the short track length and seamless transitioning to create the essence of poetic mood music that never gets tedious or monotonous; it isn't funky, melodic, or very beautiful, but it is rather calming."
